In the article understanding rhetoric the first main point I am taking away is that they are trying to explain what rhetoric is and why it is used. I understand that rhetoric is meant for asking questions that do not necessarily have and answer. Also it is a means to shut down conversations and debate to allow a group to get to an agreement. Another main point in this article is that rhetoric dated back to Plato and philosophy. They say Plato thinks that teachers taught rhetoric wrong. He thinks teachers use it as a means to deceive people but really it is just to better themselves. It should be used more to hide flaws of mankind and not to encourage improvement on them. It was also thought that Aristotle and Plato did not like the sexual and violent crimes in plays. They thought it was not good for kids to see that. Although plato thought that it shouldn’t be done at all Aristotle thought they should use it and give consequences to the actor to give a message that it is bad to do these things. Which would in turn help the children to understand what to and not to do. The second article talks about using visual rhetoric by using hypertexts. They say use hypertext to blend visual and the meanings of the word. It will help distinguish the importance of the word and meaning behind it. it will also give it a nice visual to make the reader look at it more.
