Our reality is constructed by receiving reactions from people around us or the society we live in. In Black Mirror Season 3 Episode 1, people can rate each other from one to five stars for every interaction they have with each other. The reality in that world was constructed by people around each other, if anyone did something that most people think is good, then that person receives high rating and will believe that doing such thing is good, and they will continue to do so, but if other people criticize that person and give low rating, then he/she will not continue to do it because it is known as “bad things”. Then, in that person’s reality, he/she will figure out what is good and what is bad, by receiving reactions from people around him/her. This is the concept of common sense, like hitting someone, is not something appropriate, and helping people when they need help is credible. So, this is how I think our reality in this world is constructed. In our world, people also rate each other as the world in Black Mirror but depending on our wealth, education, level of appearance, and achievements. For example, we all have different perspective because we have different reality, but these realities are constructed not by our self, but, by the public and people surrounding us, so even we have different perspective, we have similar objectivity regarding the society and common sense, like stealing, we know it’s bad, and being a smart student who gets all A’s on the exams, we know it’s good. We are like the people in Black Mirror, we want the higher rating, so we want to work harder, and we don’t want the low rating, so we want to get close to people with higher ratings, like Lacie in this episode of Black Mirror. In our society, we hang out with people who are similar, or better than us, instead of getting close with people who are not as good as us.
